DUKW Steering wheel

How do you remove them from the steering column? The local scrap yard has one but the wood needs to be repaired or replaced. Hate to see it chopped up and recycled.
Soak nut/shaft in penetrating oil.
Then use the military style puller.
Works perfectly with no damage to shaft or wheel hub.
