Re: Rear Brake Adjuster Question
The SS ring under the cap would be a press fit. That would be about the best you could do (all of my and others ideas) but would be very expensive.

Re: Rear Brake Adjuster Question
I forgot how much "fun" this was... Not quite done yet, tomorrow replacing the flex hoses (Oh boy) an bleed.
I think if I was in WW2 and my full time Army job was to rebuild these brakes in the field, I think I would have gone AWOL!
From what I can see, and according to my records, I have never replaced these shoes in my ~60,000 miles of driving this cargo truck and it had ~28,000 on it when I bought it for $525 in 1980. I have replaced the cylinders, greased the bearings and replaced WB seals, but no shoes at least on the rear-rear axle since have owned it.

Re: Rear Brake Adjuster Question
Two things to consider: I have been converting all my axle vents to a GM pn 25892279. The is part is plactic can holds no pressure on the seals. You can either thread the plastic or force it to accept threads as you push down and turn it into the axle housing.
2nd: I tried something different with my new Snap-On spring tool (pn to follow). I took two welding clamps and clamped them to the flat area on the backing plate where they easily stay. Then I took anything and placed it between the clamp and the shoe on each side. This holds the shoes up against the brake adjusting screws. It is MUCH easier to stretch the spring this way.

Re: Rear Brake Adjuster Question
Just out of curiosity, what brand of hoses do you typically use on your trucks? I was able to cross-reference the GM PN to some NAPA hoses (UP 4000). I have always had pretty good luck with NAPA parts. However, when I got them home I was surprised to see that they (like many other replacement parts today) are made in China.replacing the flex hoses
On a related note, a little piece of CCKW trivia: What part designed to work on the CCKW is currently used on the F-16 ?
The aforementioned rear brake hose, GM 2076248, is now listed as NSN 4720-00-359-0464. According to this website: http://www.parttarget.com/4720-00-359-0 ... 861-1.html , one of the current applications for this hose is the F-16.
Wonder if they use those wheel cylinders, and caps, too ?
Best Regards..

Re: Rear Brake Adjuster Question
Keeping the brakes working on thousands and thousands of CCKWs must have been a monumental task.I think if I was in WW2 and my full time Army job was to rebuild these brakes in the field, I think I would have gone AWOL!
But what about the DUKWs? I can't imagine what it was like to keep'em stopping after spending a few months in and out of the water (often salt water, too).
And, I still wonder what those DUKW tour boat operators do.
Best Regards...

Re: Rear Brake Adjuster Question
The bottom end of the brake shoes find their own position and do not need to be adjusted. The hole in the shoe that the spring loaded pin passes through is much larger than the pin diameter so the linkage plates can pivot on the large pin and allow the shoes to achieve full contact with the drum.
It's a very simple and clever arrangement and works well.

Re: Rear Brake Adjuster Question
David, the hole in the shoe with the spring is faulting in one of the shoe and was put in its local a bolt with a nut.Can the linkage plate be possible to pivot?

Re: Rear Brake Adjuster Question
A bolt and nut could be used in place of the pin and clip washer BUT you would have to use a self locking nut or castlated nut and split pin as you MUST NOT simply tighten it up. You will most definitely have to use the spring or one very similar and compress it the same amount as it was when installed with the pin and clip washer.
Remember that the hole in the shoe has to be oversize in relation to the pin (or bolt) to allow the shoe to take up its correct position.

Re: Rear Brake Adjuster Question
Hi Fernando,
If you are talking about the small pin on the banjo type axle (GM 477443) I have an extra one here. It is used, but in good condition.
If you PM me your address I can mail it to you.
Best Regards...

OK. If you change your mind, let me know. It is pretty small, so it should fit into a first class envelope.

Re: Rear Brake Adjuster Question
I you use a bolt and nut in place of the pin and clip on the arms on the bottom, I put use a regular nut and bolt and prick-punch the nut-bolt interface to lock it in place. Tighten the nut down so you have the correct height for the spring. Measure one with the original set up

My welding job seems to be holding up. I have also taken the good Dr. Deuce's advice, and periodically move the adjuster bolts a little to keep things from sticking.
