K53 Finally Going Home
Finally, after a month or so, we were able to go up to Campo (approximately 105 miles from Camp Pendleton) to retrieve the K53E...
It took almost 4 hours to get 'home'.
It was a real pain to get the thing on the trailer. The M870 trailer was dropped from the M818 and then laid down (the gooseneck folds down flat) at which point a forklift was used to move the K53 to the correct position. The forklift was then moved to the back of the trailer at which point it was used to pull the truck up. That worked at first, but then it didn't really - because the steering box is screwed up on K53, and the front wheels kept steering in all different directions. So then we had to use a big piece of wood (to steer), the forklift (to occasionally push and lift the truck over), and the M818 (to pull on the truck) all at the same time to position it on a somewhat okay place on the trailer.
After you get a load onto an M870 trailer, a forklift or wrecker has to be used to lift the gooseneck back up to a height where the truck can slide back on...
Sounds easy and though the forklift that we used was a 30,000lbs forklift, it just would NOT lift the trailer by itself. So we had to use the M818 to pull the gooseneck up while the forklift lifted up the front end far enough so we could put the landing legs down...

Thanks for the comments. I was able to see Chris T's K53E in person a couple of weeks ago and I did notice quite a few small differences between his and mine. The most obvious is that his is an earlier model with a closed cab, and the ladder is on the right side of his truck if I remember correctly.. didn't take any pictures of it.. his has a lot of rust-through as does mine, but mainly in the box. Both of our cabs are in astounding condition.
This will be a fun project and it's now one of the first trucks on my long priority list. I am wondering if I should restore my GPW as a Navy "Follow Me" jeep now...

Great to see you've got it home!
Mine may still make it to Tower next month if it stops raining.
The drivetrain is done, it just needs sandblasting, painting and 11 new tires!
If I can help, just let me know!

I'm sure there will be a lot of questions exchanged between us in the coming months!
Do you have any photos of any K53's in use?
It's hard to believe that Tower Park is coming up again so fast.. I hope you get your K53 done in time, it would be great to see it.
What color do you plan on painting it?

Sounds like you had a lot of fun dealing with the trailer .
Brian, is anyone from the SDMVCC going to have any CCKWs at TP? I understand there are going to be a lot more of them there this year. It's going to be nice walking around and looking at everyone else's trucks. Now if we could just get Veluzat Army Rentals to bring their trucks up, but that won't happen w/out them being paid to do it.

yellow CCKWs
I was told that so many are yellow because they were given to town maintence yards and they wanted to be able to find them when the guys were off goofing around. Knowing our city crew I wouldn't doupt it.

I have been thinking the same thing!pfarber wrote:Hmmm... this is getting spooky.
Why are a lot of the CCKW's painted Yellow or red? Mine is Yellow AND red !
It's yellow, bright red, or bright blue!
I think because CAT and/or safety colors are so inexpensive... even today!

Hi Brian,
Looks like the picture you posted was taken in the ETO. note the British(or German??) jerry can to the left. The small power unit in the foreground is a Homelite HRU-28 as used in many WW2 US heavy bombers.
Matt.
