ccw / cckw with semi trailer

Post by KEVINABR »

Hi to all
Has anyone any info or pictures regarding ccw's & cckw's towing semi trailers.
I have seen chevy's and stude's towing statesides and flats but i know there have been gmc's once upon a time.
I have a picture of gmc ccw and a 7 ton semi and i also have a cckw with a field modification to tow said trailers.......
regards

CCKW Towing Semi Trailers

Post by Cat Man »

Kevin,

I think the reason the CCKW's were not set up for 5th wheel trailer towing is the lenght of the frame rails vs the location of the tandem rear axles.

We have inspected a number of trucks here that were modified by thier civilian construction company owners. When they added the fifth wheel on the rear, it must be positioned over the tandem axles. The civilian 5th wheel installation requires removing or cutting off a section of the rear frame rails to provide clearance for turning with the trailer. Otherwise the location of the 5th wheel is too far aft for correct weight distribution.

Take a look in the catalog manuals and notice that on the 95% of the trucks set up with a 5th wheel, the rear frame rail extends just past the rear tires. Then look at a side view of a standard cargo CCKW. The frame extends about 14 inches past the rear tires

Some we have inspected were a quite well done modification that moved the original rear cross piece and pintel hitch assembly forward and "ALMOST" looked factory except the cross frame is bolted in and not rivited to the rails.

I know someone will send a photo that shows them in military use with a trailer, but that would be a very rare modification.

I have seen a pic of official Australian Army CCKW towing dog trailers.

Also numerous vehicles towing logging jinkers, the local forest roads are very narrow and twisty.

my vehicle has modified rear frame. ( no bumperettes)

sorry I cant supply any pics, I will check and post any I find
