It was not a fun drive. Sometimes with a headwind, I couldn't maintain a steady 55. I knew every time there was even the slightest grade. I live at 111 ft elevation and the event was at 4285 ft. There was a lot of uphill along the way. It seemed like the drag from the truck cancelled out much of the downhill benefit on the way back. SOmetimes I was down to 5.5 mpg. It was a very expensive trip.

5.5 mpg ......been there done that
That HDT I built last winter averaged 8.5 mpg in nearly 7000 miles of towing this season.....with the cruise set at 68mph...effortless up and down every hill .
I like the "wind screen"

I gave the hauler idea a lot of consideration this past weekend, especially when I was climbing hills. It isn't the MPG I worry about so much as the stressful ride. I would love to have the ability to pull over and sleep any time I wanted to. I also want to add a generator trailer for the radio truck but there is simply no way I could add to the current weight.
That was the 4th generation of the windscreen on the trip. At first I had nothing. then just a tarp, then some ropes under the tarp to give some shape, then some tent poles. All of them shifted and did little or no good. In OK City I stopped at a Home Despot and spent an hour putting together the frame under that tarp. Little or no difference on the gas mileage but a lot steadier ride.

Thank you. I can see dozens of things that aren't quite right or need improvement, but it is coming along. There is still a huge amount of work to be done and some of the stuff that is installed, needs to be worked on. The fenders are a good example. The welds need dressing and the nose of each fender needs more rounding. There is an inner panel on each fender that needs to be built.
The inside of the radio compartment is just barely started. That is my winter project.
