GMC 4x4 Cargo Truck

It looks a bit like a streched Chevrolet G506, but it has a longer wheelbase (159.5 inch for the GMC, against 145.0 inch for the Chev).

It is labelled as a "CCK-353" - is this correct?

Vanderveen mentions 100 Earth Borers were built for the Signal Corps. The Cargo version was supplied to France and later (partly) rediverted to Britain. This survivor must be one of the latter.

Who can tell more about 4x4 GMC's?

The GMC auger truck had the motor behind the cab to drive the auger.

However, the GMCs were earlier trucks; ACKs with the civilian front end, not the CCKW front end. I don't think they made them with the CCKW from end; CCK

Thanks, I would love to read more about this rare variant. What do you think: is the white one on Maple Leaf Up Forum a GMC?

Another 4x4 GMC I am interested to learn more about are the several GMC 2.5-ton 6x6 CCKWs which were modified into 1.5-ton 4x4 cargo and tractor trucks in 1943/44 (ref. Crismon and Vanderveen). Crismon states three were converted as Cargo trucks, one of which was converted into a tractor at Aberdeen Proving Grounds.

Can anyone tell more about this modification and why they were not taken into production?

Any pics available?

I think that one is the GMC version or some oddball. It has the CCKW front end, not the earlier ACKW front sheetmetal that they were built with.

To me it looks like a standard Chevrolet K-44 with most of the body cut off - the simple solution?

I had a K-43 myself, many moons ago

in 1941 GMC made 32 x CCK353's (4x4) with an Earth Auger for the US Army, they are longer than a Chev Auger and have Timken (Split) diffs and 5 stud wheels on a 159inch (from memory) wheel base. They have alot in common with the earlier ACK353 based Augers, of which there were more built. They have the early "Civiian" rectangle gauge cluster, Choke, Throttle, etc directly on the Dash (rather than mounted on a septarate plate.) and other similarities, but with the standard front clip of a CCKW

I have a manual for the CCK 353 and one for the Buda Auger used on the ACK353, however I can find no information on the Auger for the CCK. From the very few photos the CCK Auger, there are two aerial photos on the wheelsofvictory site, seams to sit further back than the ACK's Auger. The Auger manual has several photos of the Auger and the ACK but does not mention the CCK, also the master parts list for the GMC does not list the CCK's Auger manufacturer only the Contract number of the CCK.
Of note the manual shows the 1939/40 ACK, the manual is dated Jan 1945 and was printed in 1952, the early Auger must of been in service along time.

I would like to get in touch with the Australian Auger owner to see if it is a GMC or Chev, I think its a GMC.

There is a CCK353, most of one anyway here in New Zealand but missing the rear of the chassis, I also have most of two ACK 352's, ex USMC SWB 4x4's but these where not Augers, and we have been making comparisons with the two vehicles as they are currently at the same location.

Contract: W-393-QM8797
Chassis: 41190 to 41209
USA number: W-003678 to W-003691

Contract: w-398-QM10314
Chassis: 41210 to 41221
USA number: W-004133 to W-004144

The NZ truck's chassis is CCK 41215 which would make it W-004138
The Cab tag shows it as a type 1574 Cab

We are tying to find out more information and any info on these that we can get will help provide the entire picture.

Did anyone notice that the wheels are only 5 lug? I don't understand what thats about!

The earlier Timken axles were 5 lug Budd.

The ACKWX was 5 bolt non-Budd
