Early GMC CCKW 352 Data Plate

Post by Steve »

Hi,
I am new to the forum and will be picking up a 1941 closed cab 352 when it has been restored. I posted this query on the Dodge site but could not upload the picture for advice on whether the date of manufacture was correct and stamped properly in the correct format. As you can see the chassis number is quite early and it does not quite tie up with the date of delivery . I asked Joel to look at this on the dodge forum so perhaps now there is a picture he can give me his opinion obviously with anyone else. I also attach a photo of the truck before it was stripped to the chassis - again lease see photo. Steve

Steve,

Nice looking truck good luck with it.

There are a couple of people on here who have the serial number build sequence by month. They should be able to help you with that.

I am sure they will chime in.

Looking at this again.

My plate only has "6-45" as the delivery date.

I question the sequence of dating used in the stamping. Not usually what was done here in the states.

Anybody have a picture of their 41 plate?

I believe the plate is a zinc like material does not appear to be brass - the frame number ties up with the data plate. Just wonder if this is a restrike carried out when being refurbished? I also attach a photo of the frame number. Regards Steve

I agree with you on the "restrike"
The date on my plates is only "month / year" same as Bill's
The re-build tag ( stateside ) is also dated with the same "month / year " format

Hope this helps

I believe that the dataplate is incorrect for that vintage truck. It would have said manufactured by Yellow Truck and Coach div of GM

March 1941 was when it was made according to the sn

6999 trucks were made that month.

It is one of the 1st banjo axled trucks

Thanks for the information - I think I was right to query the dataplate, it has obviously been made up using a blank data plate either by a previous owner or by mistake after refurbishment by the military (possibly european). How hard is it to get a repro or original data plate with the correct manufacturer etc? Regards Steve

Repros are avail. although maybe only in zinc ????
Frank vonRosenstiel ( in Ontario Canada )is the only one that I know...but they maybe avail thru other vendors as well.
I found an NOS(blank ) brass data plate for a 352 with winch at a show in Pa last year, Marv Cooper was the vendor he advertizes in Supply Line ( classifieds )he may have other plates ?????

It would also appear that even tho' your truck went thru some sort of re-hab it looks like it fortunately kept several of it's correct "( early) " model spotting features ie small fuel fill, logo grill, semetrical grill guard, blk out headlite mount on top of guard, master cylinder location, is the smaller sized battery under the "co-drivers " feet ? as well.

Hope this helps

There is also a member of the board, who I think is from Poland, who does repro plates.

He goes by the username of Lt.Horne.

One of the items you should have is the TM ....and it the TM you will find the complete on board tool and spares list.
It is avail repro thru Portrayal press , there maybe other sources nearer to you as well.
Are you going to be part of the 514th group ?

Hope this helps

John you are right I should invest in the TM - I should know this! - as for the 514th Group, not sure I have a friend who is part of that group so it is a possibility.

Has any member of the forum the same year and model as the truck I am getting - would be good to see some photos of a restored truck i would also like some idea of the bonnet number - is the one on the truck at present correct for the time of build?

Regards

The hood number would start with a W and I believe it would be in blue. I may be able to give you a range of hood numbers, but unless you find one on the hood by sanding, you can never be sure. Even then, the hood may have been swapped.

I would be grateful for some idea of the number range as the present bonnet number is W 4158627 - S - which is possibly wrong as per the data plate. Regards Steve
