Joel & others,

Are these similar to the Hipkins devices that you mention??

I know that I have a 1938 dated "Motor Transport" field Manual that shows this very type of device, including a similar device that could be used on single axle trucks like the Chevy 1-1/2 ton.

They are exactly what was being discussed. As for others I believe they were on the wrong track and were talking comments Gen Patton made about track extenders. These were common back in 40s-50s as there were abundant surplus stocks. They are guaranteed to make your CCKW Self Destruct at speeds over 5 MPH for any distance. The ride is bone jarring. A good curio for display, and a lot of work to install. They were used in combat. I had a lot of !st hand anecdotal stories by those who used them. Sadly the Drivers and Motor Sargeants who toldme their stories are now gone.
