CCKW RIFLE RACKS, OR HOLDER, RIFLE, W/WO/COVER

There were two carried with only provisions for them in the Open Cab CCKW. The Closed Cab CCKW, Although used in combat, the Closed Cab CCKW had no room to install the Holder inside. The Holder came under two GM Part Numbers, GM-2185230 would get you one w/o the zippered canvas cover, and GM-2206936 would get you the Holder with the zippered canvas cover which superceded the earlier Part No.. The canvas cover was stapled to the back edge of the Holder. These are rough on rifle stocks, as they will gouge them.
The Rifle Holder was also mounted in some Ordnance and Engineers equipment up into the 60s, I remember having a New Cat 12 Road Grader with the covered holder in our battalion in 1962. They probably disappeared as the M-16 and M-60 were phased in.
They are hard to find and command a hefty price, at least $125.00 and up. There are some French Army surplus ones that surface from time to time, they have French printing stamped onto them. They tend to fit a bit different and you discover that your Springfield or Garandstock will not fit as the holder is a bit snug. The French may have designed them for Rifles other than the standard US Military. They do look the same as the original US version. There have been some repros offered by some of the popular Jeep Parts Dealers also.

I am not sure, but I thought I saw in a manual for a Chev closed cab a rifle holder on the pass side mounted to the floor and a bolt coming out of the dash,

I concur with that. Somewhere I have a picture of a Chevy 1.5 ton 4x4 Fire truck in the ETO with a rifle rack (no canvas cover) mounted between the floor and the dash (passenger side near the door) with a M-1 Carbine in it.

On my Chevy there is the hole in the floor and the bolt on the dash where this piece will go.

Must have been interesting for the passenger to sit there.....

Kinda like my Chev auger truck with one of the control levers between the driver and the door...

I am talking CCKW, and if you check the Parts Manuals, it will be Just the ORD9s tho as there is little, if any in a TM10 Quartermaster for the CCKW Open Cab. Yes they are listed for the Closed Cab Chevrolet "N" Series but not "NQ" Bomb truck
They are not listed in the TM10 for the CCKW tho.

I am going to install a Rack in mine...since it is a "Combat" Fire Truck.....

The cramped space will help keep the "Vermin" out.

Did I ever tell you that my mother's "Rosie the Riveter" job during the war was working part time (after finishing her day job) at Underwood Typewriter, in Hartford CT, inspecting M-1 Carbine Rifle barrels.

I need to find a nice Underwood M-1.

I have a video from vintage video on 1st echelon maintenance on the CCKW, early video with the driver wearing a kidney gas mask bag. It showed only a brief shot of him putting his M1 in a holder on the outside at the mirror of a closed cab barrel frist. has anyone sence this style?

Also I have two of the zippered canvas holder that are in bad shape if someone wants them, pay the shipping and box fee and there your.

I have an early M-1 Garand in one holder and a 1903A3 in the other rifle holder. I also have a M-1 carbine manufactured by Winchester. I have had it since 1961 when I bought it in a pawn shop in Shreveport, Louisiana for $25.00

the chevy took a special mount to the floor on the passenger side. the dash had a threaded stud in it and was on 44-45 chevys/ picture to follow. going to try to reproduce the bracket.

Hello,
there is a Rifle Holder inside my Closed Cab, it is positioned horizontally behind the seats, just in front of the rear window. It looks pretty impractical, but seems to have been there for ages. It has a zippered cover, which is made of a leather-like material, looks almost like something that came off a motorcycle.
