I can just picture this truck rounded up with hog feed, or a load of sileage. It will be interesting to see the winch in action, looks like it is ready to pucker up the propeller shaft. Another custom vehicle, by Bubba. A true example of War Surplus "Americana".

Joel,

Was this a front winch moved to the middle....or did it start as a mid mount as a pole setter or some type of vehicle like that?

In the above picture it looks like some type of cable guiding tower for the winch between the cab and bed. Maybe they used this as dumper?

I see no prop shaft for the winch so I am guessing it is for "asthetics" only.

Hard to tell what it started out as, from the pics provided. Later tonite I could research the Pole setter winch, but It looks like spontaneous enginering right now.

Not really, just used the first thought that came to mind. I have seen it all. The methods used to arrive at the finished product are realy a form of "folk art". It is amazing what people turned cheap army trucks into. A fresh coat of OD would net this guy 3 times the price.

Pole setter and Auger truck had the BIG winch mounted above the frame and driven by a BIG silent type chain from the pole setter or (more parts) auger xtra transfer/transmission that was driven via the special (for these trucks) Chev transfer case. Most people think that the winch and auger were driven from a PTO on the transmission. Not so. The power goes right out the back of the xfer case with std u-Joints and drive shaft parts to the special xfer/transmission. The Auger truck has more moving parts than 3 CCKWs...!!!!!

I have one of each: Pole setter (a cut up parts truck) and an auger truck.

The way they mounted the winch (same winch both trucks), it is very difficult to get off of the frame. I have had to cut more mounting parts on the parts truck than I wanted and it still is on there...!

No I do not know what winch it is, though I think it is NOT the auger/pole setter winch because the Chev midship winch is bigger. Also, the auger/pole setter winch (from memory) is driven from the drivers side, but from the back end of the truck.

Actually, it must not be the CCKW/Chev front winch unless it is reversible as far as drive to the winch itself is concerned. If you mounted the front mounted CCKW/Chev winch midship and tried to drive it off of the PTO, the shaft would be on the wrong side of the transmission. The chain drive on the Auger/Pole setter gets around that problem.

It is not the Garwood/Heil winch. I ain't going to loose any sleep over it, as it is just another pile of iron looking for another home. It is light years from becoming a finished product.
