Jerry Cans

Post by armydriver »

The CCKW and Chevy 1 1/2 tons probably had more to do with the 20 liter Jerry can than any other military vehicles during WWII , when considering how many they hauled full of gasoline to Pattons thirsty tanks and MacAthurs Red Ball Express in the Philippines.
It is funny in that it seems the jeep guys are a lot more interested in jerry cans than the big truck owners, and yet generally anywhere from one to several cans were mounted on these fuel consuming beauties.
If you have your truck in ETO markings German, British and American cans can be used in your displays on your trucks as no cans were discriminated against when fuel was needed to be hauled.
You Pacific guys might want to put one of the Marine cans that have the German type spout on your truck , just for something different.
Jerry cans can be a lot of fun to display and collect. :D

Hi AD,

You are right they are a subject in themselves. I just received one of the square Air Corps cans,a few small dents but as new inside,it will be used to carry fuel for my WW2 Homelite APU's,I have one from a B29 and an early B17/24 unit.

I donated an NOS 43 Dated Conco USMC small neck Bidon to the Ft Economy Museum for display on Sam Werner's restored WWII USMC Holden Jeep Ambulance. It is worth a trip to visit the Museum owned by Russ Jones which houses the Sam Werner Collection. It is located in Kingston Ohio.

I have two of the small neck cans , one dated 42 and one 43, but not NOS, but after cleaning them up and a new coat of paint they look good. Fuel cans are one of the accounterments that can be a lot of fun as there are so many manufacturers, markings and of course countries that used them in various shapes and sizes.

My two favorite cans in my collection are the 1943 dated German can stamped Wermacht at the bottom and the 1944 dated British can that has a NATO label for Benzine on it.Next in line are the two Marine cans, just because they are a little unusual.

I have added an unusual can to my collection . It is a 1941 dated Conco. These early cans were galvanized steel and the screw lid has only two ears instead of the four found on later cans. The lid chain is also rivited to the handle instead of the cotter key type attachment. :D
