Well my 1945 353 CCKW will be here tomorrow morning. And I know that my truck is one of the many Denmark CCKW's that have returned stateside from their long service overseas. And as we all know the old engines used the lead in the gasoline as a lubricant for the valves and guides to keep them from burning up. And I'm sure that the engine has been rebuilt during it's military career with Denmark. But has anyone with one of these post war Europian rebuilds had any problems with running unleaded gas in their trucks or are you putting lead additive in your gas to keep the valve guides from being burned up from the unleaded gas and its lack of lubrication. Or did they change the valve guides to a harder material during the rebuilds overseas to compensate for unleaded gasoline?

I live i Norway and I have a 45 CCKW 353B1.
The past 5 years my truck has rolled some 12000 miles with unleaded fuel. I use a Shell additive called Millenium..
No prob...

I talked to the guy on the phone thursday. He has four cases of the lead additive. He wants 98.00 a case for 12 quarts of the stuff. He had bought it to run in a 63 Vette with a 409 engine in it. He blew the engine last year and sold the Corvette.

A lot of places sell a "Lrad Substitute" which if you read the bottle is Sodium. They never used Sodium as an anti-knock/valve cushioning material for gas engines to the best of my knowledge. I believe it is a 'feel good' product.
I did the Chevy 350 valve conversion in my original WW2 270 in my cargo truck as explained by Reg Hodgson in an MVPA article. In addition, they (the machine shop) did the hardened seats and additional teflon valve guide seals. Reg claimed that he had more power etc. I believe he had a sick engine. I noticed no noticeable difference in performance though I believe the engine ran a little rougher.
Be careful with the lead. It is quite poisionous in concentrated form....
