M36/M49 ringmounts and brackets

Post by Hammerhead »

Greetings all,

Are both the M36 and M49 ringmounts "correct" for WWII CCKW's? What's the differences between the two? Does anyone know the height difference with a ring mount installed vs. just the topbows/canvas? Thanks for any info. Hammerhead

Hi Hammerhead, The M49 bit is the part number for the ring itself, this common ring is used with several different types of support set ups, giving you the M36, M37 ring mounts. The M36 set up is correct for open cab CCKW, DUKW and some wreckers.

On the M36 mount, the M49 ring is supported by three steel legs, these legs can be adjusted in height in their clamp brackets to give a variation in clearance above the cab roof canvas. There is not much adjustment but there is some, maybe 2"- 3". Its worth noting that the height of the ring is under the height of the roof bows, its the traveler and yoke that adds the excess height.

I can measure the minimum height achievable above the roof bows for you tomorrow.

TM 9-801 however gives the following under Vehicle Dimentions:

Max Overall height with ring mount - unloaded 119 "

Max overall height Tarp installed (without ringmount) unloaded - 108.1/8" to 110"......... depends on model.

Hope that helps.

Ring Mount Details

Post by Cat Man »

Take a look at the detail information on M36 ring mounts on Open Cab CCKW in the "Technical" section of is web site.

Click on "Gun Ring and Then M36 Ring Mount.

There is actually about 12 inches of variable height adjustment on the CCKW mount legs. This is seen on the small welded "lugs" on the leg at the right rear. They are 2 inches apart.

Thanks guys for the information and clarification. I was considering purchasing a set (M49 ring and M36 mounts) while they are still around but it will be quite awhile to purchase the gun to go with it!

My shop door is 10 feet so It sounds like I'll just get the vehicle in with the ring and no other acessories! Thanks again, Hammerhead :D :D

Keep in mind there are 2 rings 1 WW2 and 1 post war
The "early" ring has a very wide Bearing flange both upper and lower and inner and outer.
While the "later " ring has a much narrower Bearing flange it is also MUCH lighter and if improperly mounted will distort easily thus preventing smooth trolley operation ( easily fixed with proper mounting  )
Both are pictured in the "tech" section Cat Man referred to.
