CCKW Blacksmith Set

Who was it that said, "When you just don't know what to do next, start another collection"?

I'm always on the look out for ordnance and engineer stuff, as if I don't have enough GI kit to go with the CCKW Engineer Dump truck as it is.

Here is an interesting set up that I picked up last fall. It is the engineer supplementry blacksmith set. The portable forge is new and the tool chest is like new inside. I have some of the tools and will try and fill in some others. This same equipment was carried on the CCKW welding shop van set M12.

We also got some GI one and two man Crosscut Saws in the deal. I'm thinking about having a "bunker building" contest for the kids at one of this summers events with some logs and saws.

Should make an interesting Combat Engineer display. Stuff is still out there.

How much did the blacksmith set cost you?

There is a German set on a militaria site for $900 and it is pretty rough shape. I have some blacksmithing experience and would love to have a portable forge again.

So the welding truck came with a set like that? Now I have to start looking for one too. My project shop van was a welding shop originally...

Those tools were a nice find.

What type of interior was the blacksmiths van body?, I have a shopvan, with drawer system and heavy work tops down either side, not able to find what the use was for.

Thanks

Wish I knew what the welding shop looked like inside, maybe somebody here has further information. My van body came without any inside fittings, but still it was full of intresting Navy junk, the Norwegian army had filled it with old boxes of naval parts, bolts and office equipment. There were, however, a few clues about its former interior: two battery trays hanging under the body, an oily and stinking corner where there used to be a genset (PE-95?). It doesn't look like, thou, that it had had lots of drawers.

A friend lent me a book U.S.Military Vehicles World War 2 by E.J.Hoffschmidt & W.H.Tantum, there is a good section on shopvans, my truck looks to be from the picture, a 'Signal Corps Repair Truck M30, Standard', it has excact drawer system, wooden drawers and shockproof shelf for delicate test equipment, just as in my truck.

There is a plate attached to the wooden work top, National Farm Machinery. Coopertive, Inc. on this plate is stamped a model, type and serial no', guess this was the company who manufactured this equipment?. Any one ever heard of this company?, probaly long gone.

Weldin Truck M12 Interior

Here is the interior of the Welding Truck M12.

The blacksmith anvil is stowed on the floor in the center. The portable forge is stowed in front of the bench on the left side of the van. You can see it in the photo on the right, in the corner.

Behind the panel under the bench at the front of the van was a 300 amp welder with a Ford flat head V8 engine.
