Daniel,

It is back in the tank. Even though I could not find a new one I had to have something to plug the hole.

I will see if I can remove it and take a few pics and measurements.

Tape is metric so the units are centimeter. You must divide per 2.54 to have the inches equivalent.

Does anyone know how these work electrically? Obviously the float goes up and down to rotate the shaft. It only has one wire going in. How does that work?

I had mine apart tonight to clean the entire thing. It was pitted with rust depite being made of stainless steel and brass. It would appear to be a simple wipe style contact inside the top. There is a fine wire wound around the shaft and thus grounded to the chassis (or at least the tank itself) There is a small spring-loaded contact that meets a sprial wound "wipe" contact that is attached to the nut. I guess the fuel gauge reads the resistance based on the position along the contact.

Hi Neil here is a link to a site that will explain how to trouble shoot your gauge and sending unit.
