Information on 270 engine data plate and engine rebuild

I just bought an old remanufactured 270 engine and would like any information that anyone can provide. This engine has not been run and come bolted to a metal stand on a wood & metal pallet. It is complete with clutch, bellhousing, spark plugs, distributor, manifolds, carburetor, fan, fan belt, air cleaner, etc. Most of the parts are covered in cosmoline.

I have not started opening up the motor to see what the internal condition may be. Does anyone have an idea who rebuilt this and if they normally did a good job?

Airborne, Do you have any idea what kind of quality they put into these motors? I have seen other messages on the board of good & bad rebuild processes, but nothing said about Buchmann. Thanks for any info you may be able to supply

old repair made with us original parts , usually rebuilt by private company better than french army rebuilt

I purchased a spare engine last year, that I am currently rebuilding. I'm pretty sure it is a CCKW engine. It has all of the later features: deep oil pan, cast iron carb, CCKW front engine mount, etc. There is evidence of at least two rebuilds: 4 small rivets in the block under the current Rossford Ordnance Depot rebuild tag.

I have a couple of questions concerning engine ID:

On the engine manufacturer's tag, the SN listed is: 270I458I (Note: those are the letter "I" not the numeral "1".) The pad next to the distributor has the same number. Has anybody seen a number like this before? I had thought that the engine SNs were, like the name implies, a number, like 237648.

The casting number is: 2135412. I know that there is a casting number list out there that has been posted on numerous websites (i.e. http://www.oldgmctrucks.com/Photos/GMC_Numbers.htm, stating that this casting number is for GMC 270 engines made only from 1946 - 1952. However, this list does not include wartime production. It seems likely to me, that the 2135412 casting entered service during WWII, and remained in production through the post war period until '52. Two reasons for this assertion:

1) I have seen a number of posts by CCKW owners reporting casting numbers of 2135412.

2) The tag on this particular engine says " Yellow Truck and Coach", which did not exist after 1943.

Could this engine possibly have been a war time service replacement ?
