The truck in the above picture took part in the
following parade. Below is an interesting description of the celebration
from the vehicles owner.
The parade is an annual event to commemorate the Battle of St. Julien which
took place in Belgium during WW1. The first ever gas attack took place during this battle. The 10th Battery, Royal Canadian Artillery took part
in this battle. When the gas came the French army ran, abondoning a large
area of the front. The 10th Battery which was covering that area of the front, held it's ground as the gas came and kept firing at the advancing
Germans point blank over open sights with their 12 pounder field guns and turned them. The 10 Battery was and still is an Artillery reserve unit
from St. Catharines and has a history in the Niagara area that goes back over 200 years. Every year in April, past and present members of the 10th
Battery commemorate the Batle of St. Julien with a parade, memorial service
at the St. Catharines Cenotaph and a formal army dinner on the floor of the
local armoury. I was a Captain with this unit for 16 years.
The fellow standing up and taking the salute is Larry Holleran. His father
served with the 10th Battery during WW1 in Europe. Larry served with the 10th Battery During WW2 in Italy and later in Europe. |
