Dummy front drive flanges

Post by pop larkin »

Hi. Are there any instructions out there for making the dummy front drive flanges? Thanks.

Hi Pop

No I don't know of any "formal " instructions but.....

It is however pretty simple
your choices are
Drill out the splines in the flanges
or
Simply machine off the entire splined collar on the drive flange
or
Machine new "dummy" flanges or axle end covers out of steel or alum. and simply bolt them on.
Remember to keep a spare good set under the seat  for obvious reasons.
Hope this helps

What I do is to make the inside dimension of the new dummy, the outside dimension of the original to guarantee that you have clearance past the end of the axle stub. I tried cutting out the spline on a banjo flange. What I found out is that the axle just about comes out the end. I kep cutting, and cutting, finally I cut right thru and it looked ugly when I had to weld on a patch.

Hope this helps. As John says, keep the originals in a trash bag under the seat just in case. You will be surprised how much quieter it is and how infrequently you reinstall the real ones...

I have had these on my (banjo) Bomb Truck and (banjo) CCKW for maybe 15 years now and another friend has had them on his (split) CCKW for years too with no problems.

Just make sure you have enough clearance at the end. That is why I say make the inside dimension the same as the real ones outside dimension to ensure that you have that clearance.
