Cleaning out Fuel Tank

Has anyone on the group successfully cleaned out a Chevy 1.5 ton 4x4 between the rails fuel tank on the truck

I have the drain plug out and would like to remove the sludge that may be inside.

What product can I spray into the tank that will clean the junk out and make it flow out the drain plug hole?

I would prefer not to have to remove the tank as access is difficult on a Fire Truck.

In the old days when we had quality leaded gas and the oxidized fuel just formed a hard varnish like gum, acetone was added to the tank at a mixture of 1 pint per gallon, and the deposits were dissolved as the fuel passed through the system. Today's fuels act different and a trip to the radiator shop with the fuel tank may be the only way.

Joel is right. I had to remove my tank. The bottom was like a tar pit. The radiator shop cleaned it up very nice and even repaired a couple of small pin holes in it. Good Luck on your tank Bill.
