Tailgate repair

My tailgate has been modified in order to tranport long materials.

Then somebody tried to repair the square hole by placing two sheets of metal. The result is, less we can say, awfull.

So I will probably need to ask a professional to get him to weld properly a new sheetmetal hardware.

Any suggestions?

I would do what you are thinking about. Get a professional welder to weld in a complete new panel, the same thickness as the original steel.

May only find gage in Metric, will vary some.

For sure, I can't buy a whole repro tailgate from Vehicles of victory and get it shipped to Switzerland!! It would be too expensive. I can maybe find a tailgate in Europe, but when? I think I'll ask a professional to do the job.
