Valve Cover Gasket

Post by dr deuce »

From time to time you will need to adjust the valves on your Jimmy. Unfortunately, the GMC 270 et. al. heads are quite flat and the oil that comes up to the valves while you are adjusting the valves runs right off of the head, down the sides of the engine and makes a BIG mess.

To prevent this:

Install a new cork gasket by throughly cleaning the head mating surface and apply Permatex (orange colored in the gold tube) sealer to the head and install the cork gasket and install the valve cover. Leave it for a day or so for the sealer to cure. Then when you take the valve cover off to adjust the valves, there will be a lip formed by the gasket that seals to the head! Because you only applied the Permatex to one side of the gasket, removing or installing the valve cover will not damage the now glued on gasket. It may also fix that pesky leak you have at the back of the engine!
