CRANKSHAFT PULLEY

HI TO ALL
COULD ANYONE TELL ME THE BEST SOLUTION TO TAKE OFF THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY WITH OUT HAVING TO DESTROY IT ????
I BELIEVE UK JACK HAD A SLIGHT PROBLEM WITH SAID ITEM....

Kevin,

Removing the front pulley and damper takes a special puller. Don't try anything that pulls on the outer rim.

See the illustration below. The center threaded section pushes on the end of the crankshaft and forces the hub off the shaft. Making one would not be that hard. Some automotive shop puller sets have these components.

Have you attemted to remove the pulley with a generic crankshaft pulley removal tool? As shown in the service manual.

If that does not work, I dont know of any non-destructive method of removal.

I suspect most of them involve shock to break the taper... ie big hammer

The crankshaft stub is NOT TAPERED. It's a straight shaft. The pulley, inner hub and vibration damper all pull as a group.

Kevin, there is a "Field Expedient" for this if you want to test your skills,...and nerve !

Where the puller tool fits there is two holes. Fit two long bolts through these and slip two "thin" spanners behind the pulley damper infront of the gear case cover, to take the pressure.

By turning the bolts a 1/4 at a time the pulley will come off its straight taper. You may have to build up a little pressure to start it moving but if you adjust the two screws evenly this should not be a problem.

I have done several this way without damage to the gear cover. But you will need "quality" (read thin) spanners as bearers.

I believe you can buy a generic Crankshaft pulley removal tool from
el cheapo auto parts places....they have a threaded hole in the middle and
the "arms" also have threaded sections, but can be positioned to fit various pulley sizes.

They are specifically for crank pulleys, and work similar to the original
shown in the manual.

As noted by other obsevers, definately dont use any type that grips the outside of the pulley.

The only thing maybe is where the main thread bears onto the crakshaft area maybe easily damaged, as it is strangely shaped for the hand crank to fit.
i'm not sure about that

I think the solution offered by Karoshi sounds very practical.

Can u slide in metal plates to distribute the load over the timing cover?

brought a harmonic puller set and off the pulley came no problem
