Hi Everyone…I just joined this forum and this “New Project” is mine. :) I found this and an open-top CCKW here in Rapid City about 5 months ago. In the video you can just see the other truck in the background as I drive past. I also have a 1 ½ ton Chevy and two ½ ton Dodges…all awaiting restoration. :roll:

I am running surplus 9.00 x 20 tires on this truck because they are so much cheaper, but they are too wide and run into the springs on both the front and the back. So as you can see in the video I have mounted all the tires as singles the outside duel way…so it looks really funny in the front! :lol:

But can anyone tell me what I need to do to get these tires to work? Everything I have read says you can run the 9.00 x20s on CCKWs just fine, but the sidewalls contact the springs even in the back.

Are there spacers? Can I mount these wider tires on the old wheels? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Wow!

Many solutions? What are they?!!!!! I'm at a loss to know where to turn. The only thing I can think of is to get a bunch of old wheels and cut the middles out of them for spacers and get longer lugs.

Not to throw of on your truck ........but get rid of those tires it looks like the circus is in town and one day you are going to forget and make a hard turn and that tire will lock in the spring and you will be on your top !!! ,your truck would run better , look better and preform better with the right Tires !

I have 9.00x20s on my CCKW and on an IHC M-5H-6 and they clear the spsrings just fine. Are you by chance running the wider M35 type rims? You have to use the original narrow (don't remember the width) CCKW type rims to get the proper clearance. If I'm not mistaken, the CCKW bolster trucks ran 9.00x20 tires but were singled out on the rear axles.

The Bolster trucks ran on 10.00x20 or 11.00x20 tires with split rims, like Dukw´s and used spacers. I don´t remember the size of the spacers.
It is correct what Lacoda56 said, when you´re using M35 rims it just won´t fit they are to width.

Hi Fernando, the Bolster truck on the picture has M35 rims and tyres. I´ve visted that event and heard that they had several flat tyres on the way to the event, because the tyres were hitting the springs. It was a temporary solutions made for the event, but it didn´t worked out as they thought. The truck went on a trailer home after the event.

I cant afford 7.50x20s … with shipping to where I am it would be three times the price and then there are tubes, flaps and mounting on top of that.

Yes M35 rims. I bought the tires on the wheels and they were M35 take-offs. I was told by a couple different tire dealers that the 9.00x20s would NOT go on the rims made for 7.50x20s, and/or that the duels would rub together and heat up. lacoda56, have you had any trouble with this? What about in front? Did you have to change the steering stop?

Does anyone know where to find these spacers? Or where to look to find info on their original use?

The 9.00x 20 tires mount up just fine. I don't have a clearance problem on the CCKW. The tires are about an inch apart at the botom. The tires on the IHC are almost touching, but I don't run that truck on the road so I'm not concerned with spacers. In my case, I had the original rims with junk tires. You're going to have to buy rims, which will probably set you back a bunch, and then you still have the tire problem. I really don't know about spacers, but I'm sure someone here could help with them.

Well everyone – It’s been a long haul but there is one more CCKW on the line …it’s even seen action again! This “New Project” has taken me on a journey of Faith and determination, Soli Doe Gloria!

As you can see from the dates of this thread I started working in earnest on this truck in April, finally putting the finishing touches on the day before our event the 22 and 23 of Aug. Here is what it looked like then - after completing the rebuild on the major mechanical systems:

Lacking the proper wheels and tires it looked pretty funny at that point, but after four more months of work I had 50 lbs of rust and grease in my driveway and once again a venerable old machine rolled into action.

We lost the fuel pump on the first hill when we drove it up to the campsite in the Black Hills that afternoon. I hitch hiked to town and secured the new part, and after putting it on in the dark the old soldier ran like a champ for the rest for the event.

Thanks for all your help and advice in making this dream a reality for me.

Hey Daniel looks like you guys had a blast! Great way to spend some time with the young guys. Video was great as was your jimmy!
