Can anyone tell me what this seal is really for?

I cant find the number (2030600) or anything that looks like this seal in the Ord9

It (the seal) is listed on page 236 of my Ord 8 snl g-508, dated 1951. It is listed under Group 10 - Front axle, Section 1006.2, Shafts, Flanges, and Universal Joints (Split type axle) (Models CCKW and CCKWX) -continued. It is described as seal, oil, type ML 1-5/8x3.256x1/2 (axle shaft). It has a stock umber listed as H013-0500076 (how I found it), and a Ordnance number of 500076. The Mfr's number is blank (as in --------------).

It is NOT shown as having replaced a different part number, nor having been replaced. In fact it is the ONLY seal listed for the actual axle housing.

I'm not sure if this helps you, but that is what I found...

Ok a few questions:

How is the Ord-8 different form the Ord-9?

Are you able, from your Ord-8, to tell where this seal goes? I can’t seem to find anything like it in the Ord-9 diagram. In the Banjo Axle there is a very small seal on the axle shaft behind the universal joint, marked “O” in this diagram:

In the Banjo Axle this seal (O) is to keep the gear lube out of the universal joint and hub; which is grease packed. Would the seal in question (2030600) serve the same role? In the Split Axle diagram there does not seem to be a seal in that position at all.

there are no assembly diagrams at all in the Ord 7 or Ord8 portion of my manual. the only clue I can give you is that it was deliberate on the part of someone to add (axle shaft) to the description. That to me would seem to imply that the seal is not installed in the axle housing, nor in the knuckle assembly, but rather on the axle shaft itself. I don't have an earlier Ord 8 or 9, and mine is dated 1951. It is conceivable that the seal was added to address a maintenance issue...

The seal on a split that keeps the GO in the center and out of the knuckle is the 1st part inserted in each side of the housing. It is inserted from the ring gear end.

If you have GO leaking into your knuckle on a split truck, you have some work...

I cant find this seal in the Ord-9 diagram. there does not appear to be anything to keep the gear lube out of the hub.

Am I just missing it?

But more importantly - is this seal (the one on eBay) the seal that keeps the GO out or of the knuckles?

Is there an alphabetic parts list that goes along with the split axle exploded diagram that you posted? If you have it, that would be helpful to see.

I also just remembered that I have a parts book put out by Memphis equipment in the 1970's I'll check the diagrams in it and see if there is anything more helpful...

I checked my Memphis Equipment parts book this morning, and it has a parts digram very similar to the one you posted. The only major difference is the use of numbers instead of letters. It also does not show the seal that you are looking at...
