Engine weight?

Post by SpookyDad »

Can anyone tell me how much the 270 engine weighs?

I am going to pick up an engine hoist and stand, so I need to know how big to get.

Since we are on the topic of weight, how about the transmission?

The engine is over 500 lbs depending upon what is on it

REMOVE THE DISTRIBUTOR AND CARB BEFORE you try to install it. Trust me... :(

Tranny is probably about 100 lbs or so

When it comes to "shop tools" ie engine hoist , engine stand , floor jack, etc. plan on purchasing these items with surplus capacity.
The construction is usually more substantial, and you will find yourself using them for far more items( projects ) then you ever imagined
Remember also several engine cranes are designed for "automotive" applications, your CCKW is quite a bit taller.
Also having a "crane" that can safely reach high enough to load and unload your pick-up truck is always a plus.

I bet you could find some used on "craigs list" reasonably priced :)

Hope this helps

In the latest "Harbor freight tools" sales paper that runs through March 9th there is a nice 1 ton gantry crane on page 5 for $569.99 and on page 6 a electric hoist 1300 lbs capacity for $129.99. These might be very handy if one had the space , need and money for them .
I have no connection with the outfit only a good customer on occasion

Neil,

As John suggested. I have picked up a couple of engine cranes in the last couple of years off of craigs list. They were the folding leg type allegedly able to hold 1 ton. Found one for $25 and one for $35 (like new) Note that these cranes are rated for 1 ton with the boom all the way in. If extended far enough to get over the front fenders and make it to the engine it ends up getting set on the 500lb setting.

Take careful measurements and compare before just buying an engine crane. The gantry may be the better way to go.

I am lucky enough to have a small fork lift to do that type of dirty work for me. An invaluable tool...another piece of junk in the yard that the neighbors love.

HF has a 1100lb electric hoist coming up on their sidewalk sale next month for $70. I have a fair bit of pipe and other scrap around so I am thinking about making my own gantry. I used to have a tripod and a chain fall when I was trying to keep my first cars on the road. I must have pulled 20 engines with that thing. It would be nice to have a rolling gantry instead of a tripod.

Bill I don't think I can get a forklift truck past the Homeowner's Association.

Just paint it gray and put a couple of Balkenkreuz on it and claim it is a historic artifact.

I built my own "gantry" with 4000 lbs capacity
Went to the local steel retailer and we figured out what size beam and posts I should use to build a SAFE unit.
When your ready to fab one up , give me some specs of what your looking for, and I can run it by them a see what they recommend for "iron" :)
