Handcrank?
How difficult is it to hand crank a GMC without a winch?
Where can I get a hand crank?

It isn't difficult to do.....But.....not if done properly it can break your arm ...REALLY..
I like to pull the crank on the compression stroke as opposed to pushing the crank ( that's when it could bite you )
I have seen them at shows occasionally.
I purchased one parts vehicle that had a home made one in it
I always bring it along when purchasing another truck just to see if the engine is free.

In the past, I have hand cranked my 46 Chev dump (235). It was not difficult to do and I did not really fear the kickback with the modern ignition systems. In the old days, when you could adjust the timing from the steering column, if you set it wrong, it could kickback and break you arm. I also use to crank my IHC T-20 crawler. It had no starter nor place for one.
The only two problems I had cranking were once on the Chev, It was cranking very hard and when it finally caught, I found out why. It was in 1st gear!
It started towards me with the crank spinning ....
The crawler had a bad habit of "throwing" the crank out the front if you had set the throttle too high.
BTW: Bill, you still have my crank come to think of it.

Dr. D.
That sure sounds like a close one..... I am assuming you were alone while hand cranking the old chevy. Why didn't you check to make sure the transmission was in neutral, the e-brake was on etc?

Actually, I was a "rookie" as this was my 1st old big truck and it was almost 40 years agoSO it isn't just us rookies making mistakes.
