I remember reading a couple years back someone posting a trick for the wheel cylinders on the DUKW. (I think it may have been Steve Greensburg. And maybe in another forum.)
It said to take some grease and put it inside the wheel cylinder caps to keep the water out to help stop them from rusting. Seems like a good idea but I would like to verify this before I actually do it.
Just a little high temp grease if using the originals. If you have brass or SS sleeved ones, it is not necessary.
CCKW/DUKW wheel cylinders in my experience fail from the outside in due to the fact that cannot keep water/moisture out of the bore. The bore rusts past where the cups are riding. Then as the shoes wear and the cups pass the rusted area, bingo a leak.
I only use sleeved cylinders now and have had good luck with them, much more so than with unsleeved ones.
Don't forget to put anti-seeze on the adjusting screw threads and lube the rear star wheel assy adjuster and make sure it is free.

I actually got these wheel cylinders from Carquest. The bearings, brake hoses, axle seals, all Carquest. Hub seals came from Steve Greenburg and I have the shoes being relined.
You wouldn't happen to have a part number for the axle housing gasket?

I don't off the top of my head, however, the axle nut locks for the banjo are present day std items so you might bring one to your local supplier and match one up,

If anybody is interested the gasket for the cover on the Timken Banjo is Fel-Pro part # RDS 5049
I have one side of the axle back together. I was hoping to have this done last week but some other things came up. As of now this Friday is looking good for me to finish the front axle. Then it will be on to the rears.
