The GMC CCKW

I am replacing the oil seal on my front hubs. The job is going fine but I do have a couple of questions. When putting the new seal in, I am not sure how close the inside edge of the seal should be from the roller bearing.

The old grease was packed into the hub but according to the TM, I am not supposed to fill up the hub with grease. Which is the correct procedure?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Spooky
Concerning the seal placement, my personal choice is to install the seal flush with the outer surface , as oppossed to "driven home" as the originals were ,since the modern seals are usually half as thick as the original rawhide versions ,the "lip" ( the sealing part) will most likely make contact or "ride" on a section of the journal that will be free of "wear and tear"and hopefully increase the service life of the seal itself.

As for the hub "packing" and again this is my personal choice, I pack grease in the hub up to the edge of the "rollers"( of the bearing ) to help keep the grease in the bearing itself a little longer.

Thanks John. I set it in slightly from the lip but not touching the roller bearing. I compromised and 1/2 filled the hub.

The truck is coming along. Mostly boring mechanical work of late. I finally gave up on trying to fix the original Hydrovac and went with one of Bob's new post-war style. I wish I had heeded the advice on here about starting with the mechanicals before building the rest of the truck. Then they would have been out of the way and I could do the fun stuff.





100 Degree temps and funds being diverted to acquiring original radios to go in the back of the truck has slowed progress a little. There is still some major construction and a LOT of flashing to complete.

I take it its up and running around again , Thats good news .

She is running again with brakes! After tomorrow, I will have the front wheel bearings redone and I am going to take her out for a drive.

I finally got to take the truck out for a drive today. My poor dog has been so disappointed when I start the engine and we don't go anywhere. My objective was to test the new hydrovac. My dog was so happy when he got to climb up on the seat and we were off. I applied the brakes at about 15 miles an hour and the truck stopped almost instantly. The poor dog and the seat cushions ended up on the floor of the cab.

I guess the doggy doesn't want to go for a ride quite as eagerly as before ?

Actually, he is a real good sport. He still loves to go in the truck. Won't get in the minivan, but he can't wait to go in the big truck.

Whens the next event planed that your taking the truck to? How far will you be driving ?

The next event we are taking the truck to is in Colorado in October. It is 923 miles from my place, so it is going on a trailer.
The next event I will drive it to is Wings over Houston Airshow on Halloween. Even though it is "just across town", it is almost 45 miles each way.
