Burnt Gear Oil smell?

I was topping up the differential and transfer case yesterday. I noticed the oil that was in there was very dark and had a very strong burnt smell. What causes this? I am assuming it is time to drain it completely and replace with fresh oil.
The old oil dripped out on to my hands and arm. I tried Fast Orange, Simply Green, dishwashing soap, and regular soap trying to get rid off the smell. The best I could do was get it to fade slowly. Is there a a better way to remove the smell?

I am a massage therapist so Soccer Moms don't like the smell of gear oil on my hands.

What if you tried some scented hand lotion or vanilla extract , of course wearing rubber gloves in the future would be best.

When I get in bed at the end of the day after being in the shop all afternoon, and she turns to me and says "Oh, sweetie, tell me true, was it the transmission or an axle seal this time???" I know she loves me kuz she knows the difference between engine oil and gear oil at first smell.
Life is good.
