I finally got my cckw home, got the valve unstuck, bypassed the gas tank full of laquered gas with a lawn maower tank and started her up. She ran like sh@#%%&t. Had several obvious problems. Leaking exhaust/intake gasket, questionable carb and some type of electric fuel pump on it and a dragging starter. But it was running like the timing was off or a bad vac leak. I couldn;t hear a vac leak because the exhaust leak was so loud. So i put a new water pump on to replace the leakin one then put on new intake /exhaust gasket, checked the timing, it was spot on. Still ran exactly the same. BAD. So going down the list i found a mechanical fuel pump from American classic truck parts, and put on my NOS French Zenith carb.
The previuos two owners said they had tried everything and could not get the truck to run right. I found this to be a challenge. Wll the fuel pump and new carb didnt help either. So i was down to my last item on the list to diagnose. Vacuum leak from the intake to the hydrovac. I disconnected the vac line at the intake check valve and pluged it off. Got in the truck started her up and she purred like a kitten. Problem almost found at least isolated. It was getting late so i stopped for the nite. That nite i found a wonderful WWII video on youtude about the hydrovac iwatched it 5 times and something dawned on me. One side of the connection is vacuum one side takes in atmosphere and i have a vacuum leak. Sure enough next day a check and the darn thing is hooked up backwards and has been for probably 10-15 years. I got if off clean up and painted . i hope to have it back on and bled by the weekend so i can at last go on that first test drive.
