My truck seems to be consuming a lot of fuel. I haven't measured it but it seems to be in the 2 Mpg range. It seems to be running very rich at idle too. I had a messy gas tank problem and I suspect one of the jets may be plugged in the carb. I have noticed that top speed seems to be around 42 mph in 5th gear. I don't know if that is related or not but it does seem odd.
Other than the fuel consumption, she runs great. She starts quickly, doesn't stall and purrs at idle.
Is there a quick and easy way to check the carb?
How much of a job is pulling the carb and cleaning it?

The brakes are all rebuilt and the hydrovac is new. She doesn't seem sluggish like the brakes are on and there is no brake pad burning smell. That is a good thing to double check though.

Re: High fuel consumption?
You can lean it out by disconnecting the vac line to the wipers. If it is still OK then it may be to rich.
The real way to tell (IMHO) if is starts cold and runs OK w/o using the choke. If it does, it is rich

The wipers are now electric. (That's ok the Germans used electric wipers)
I will double check the line is plugged.
It does start cold with little or no choke.

Re: High fuel consumption?
If you have the original set up for the PCV/brake booster/wiper fitting, take a single layer of cloth like a T shirt and ty-warp it over the end of the wiper portion (so it doesn't suck dirt in) and give that a try. See if starts harder cold w/e the choke

Re: High fuel consumption?
I adjusted the idle speed and sprayed the entire carb with cleaner. It is a little harder to start, but runs smoother and slower at idle.
I recently drove it 60 miles to an event and it got 7.3 MPG going flat out most of the way. So I guess whatever the problem was, it has resolved itself.
