coating on axle nut sockets

Today I brought home the burma jeep and started cleaning it up, it has a large tool box on the drivers side that was packed with stuff, when I got digging into it I found a bunch of different axle nut sockets and the wheel nu socket, they all have "w" numbers which seem to be the same one that were supplied to the CCKWs, overall they are in good shape but the is some surface rust, I'd like to sand blast them and recoat them but I'm not sure what the coating is, is a light gray color but seems more substantial then just paint. Any ideas?
