Banjo - hub outer seals

Post by jakub »

As most od us knows the inner side of front wheel hub is protected by pretty complicated set up including felt ring, rubber ring with groove, spring, paper seal and few other steel elements.
I have installed new French afterwar seals (felt, rubber ring, spring), five years and 5000 miles later while doing routine maitenance I have discovered that springs have rusted to the point that they break easly and rubber disintegrated, I have ordered new sets but since they have been gathering dust on the shelf for many years the rubber doesn't seem to last for long and springs most probably will rust soon. So I have found company who manufactures rubber seals (NBR) to any given specification and other company who makes stainless steel springs. As it happens I had to order ten pieces of each so if anyone is interested I would be happy to supply them.

Today I installed the rear left hub.Reading the TM9-801 I saw that the banjo front axle is without leather seal. The correct with leather seal is the banjo rear axle.

Hello Daniel

For stainless springs I've paid 8 euro, rubber was 13 euro each, so they worked out much more than NOS spare set, also the set also includes bit of felt and paper seal. Having said that I've installed NOS parts five years ago and springs rusted away and rubber disintegrated. I hope that new setup will last longer and quality of rubber will prevent water from getting in.

Just to be sure because I have sneaky suspicion that not everyone understands which part I am taking about:

front axle, banjo type, ends with ball type surface, over this surface there is big, heay, pot like part to which hub is monted, going towards differnetial we have paper seal, steel retainer, felt seal, rubber ring, spring going into groove inside rubber ring, two half circular plates, final steel retainer.
Parts which I had remanufactured are rubber ring and spring.
