Which kind of material is rear hub gasket?

Post by Fernando Mendes »

I am looking for Banjo rear hub gasket. Is it metalic, asbesto(anti fire)?I bought here in Porto Alegre (Brazil) "ASBERITE".It is originality from asbesto material. Is it sufficient to prevent leaking? :?

I assume that this is the gasket between the axle flange and the hub?

It's called a "terne" gasket and it is made of metal (although I do not of what composition )

Hope this helps

Is it called terne or therme?I have a doubt because mine has "asbesto" in its composition.Asbesto is for work with high temperature.A important question for this forum:Is this asbesto in the gasket that not allows to leak the oil or is the rear leather outter nut?The guy that sold me this gasket here said me that exist another kind of gasket with metal composition, but it is for exhaust. :? :?

I believe the metal gasket is to no allow a single point of contact that would cause high stress in one place. It evens out the imperfections in mfg of the mating surfaces.

BTW: I always use Permatex Aviation Form-a-Gasket on the surfaces to reduce leakage. You also need to us it on the bolts on the Banjo axles because they go into the lubricant area and may weep.

The civy trucks of the era did NOT have the outer wheel seal on the Banjo axles. They used the same bearings, but no seal. The GO could go into the bearings of the truck was tipped enough. That seal on the CCKW Banjo was an after-thought and that is about how well it works.

When I install the axle, I genlty press the axle in at the end and see where/if if find resistance from the axle flange hitting the seal. If I don't have like 1/32" gap when I hit resistance, I remove the axle and pry the seal out of the outer unt a little.

Thanks doctor for your explanation.I learned one thing: inner seal is to not allow the 140 oil differential leakage, outer seal is to not allow the bearing grease leakage,ok?Mine banjo left rear axle hub was all re-drilled its eight bolts in 3\8",16G thread(the original was 14G thread),we have to close the old eight holes in the hub. They were in bad thread conditions.Ok,I will have warning in assemble mine bud and drive shaft with its eight bolts using a good product like permatex.Good luck for you. :D
