Hi all, on my Chevy i have a problem with the rear half shaft (drive shaft). In its life one shaft has split and twisted but it has not broke, what i need to know is what metal is it made from ?? would it be of cast steel ?? the reason i ask, is over here in the UK there are not many dealers or parts availiable and GMC shafts are not the same.
So could if be possible for me to cut a GMC shaft down and re weld the end from the twisted one????? I have an engineering shop close by.
Many thanks and knid regards to all

I believe you could put the GMC flanges on the xfer and (I know the rear end) rear end and use the GMC drive shaft on the Chevy

I think he's asking about the axle shafts, not the drive shafts?? Maybe?

Yes, you can ask machine shop to cut Gmc shaft to correct lenght and machine hole for shaft to flange.
Strongest way to do that is to use "shrink fit" and weld the flange only from the outside!
If you weld from inside flange, Axle will break from weld beam.

One Finnish company makes steel axle shafts for rally cars and other custom axles, They use sometimes only "shrink fit" to connect flange to the shaft, So it is pretty strong way to connect parts.
