I will have to put a washer between bearing and flange.

Bearing is new.I think the flange is worn.When we put the nut and cotter pin continues with flange excessive clearance. :o

My 42 chev plow truck leaks out the splines on the pinion.... Obviously the flange is worn.

Hi Fernando English = shaft splines I used an on line translator for English to Brazilian and this is what I came up with.
ranhuras do eixo or entalhes ao eixo
Again "A picture is worth a thousand words" :D

Hi Fernando, The tip if the shift stick was badly worn and had jumped out of the fork. I have an extra transmission so I took the top off of the spare and switched it to the one in the truck. I am going to get a new stick and repair the other one. I really like the 5 speed in the Chevy 1 1/2ton. It sits up much higher in the cab and kind of limits where your gas pedal foot sits but the 5th gear is great to driving on paved roads in the city.
So now the truck is shifting great.
I have to replace the pinion shaft seal on the rear differential because of leaks, so will be doing that really soon.

Hi Fernando What are the dimensions of the washer/spacer you put behind your flange ?
Thanks.

Hi rixtoys52,thickness=4mm;
outer diameter=59mm;
inner diameter=49mm.
In my case I think that the thickness could be more than 4 mm,because it still leak(little). :)

Thanks Fernando. I can move my pinion side to side and up and down a few mm. I will know more when I undo the bolt and take out the flange.

Thanks Fernando. I can move my pinion side to side and up and down a few mm. Maybe the bolt is loose. I will know more when I undo the bolt and take out the flange.

Fernando I found the nut was not torqued anywhere near the 160 to 250 ft lb. It was not loose just not tight enough. after I took off the flange there is the same amount of movement in the pinion shaft. How much torque did you apply to the nut ?
Did you use the spacer to eliminate the end play on the pinion?
Thanks again for your help.

My mechanic put it only by a hand tight with a long hand wrench.No spacer on the pinion. :)

Hi Fernando.

Here is a page from my Chevy manual. Same differentials.
Item 5.
AND in Portugese.
5. Instalar a anilha plana sobre a extremidade do veio de pinhão e apertar a porca baixo para uma carga de binário de 160 a 280 lbs pés. Bloquear cupilha no lugar.

Here is a link to the online Chevy G506 manual.

Our diffs are the same.
I believe you must tighten up the nut to the torque to set the bearings and prevent movement of the pinion. Any deflection of the flange will ruin the seal.
