Last night I went up to a friends house and picked up a BDU-12 practice 5-10kt N weapon! This was used to practice bombing techniques and used by various aircraft and helicopters.



Many thanks to Bill Wolf and his kids for helping to load it on the Bomb Trailer.

I drove all the way home at 50 mph, even stopping for gas and not a single problem. Just a couple thumbs up signs from drivers.

Bill had offered to bail me out.... It will be on display at the Weare Rally...

BDU-12 Nuclear Training Bomb


This is a training version of the B57 light-weight nuclear bomb. The B57 was primarily used as a depth charge though it does have land detonation applications.

It is carried by various Navy, Marine and NATO aircraft. Like the actual nuclear bomb, it can be set for low lay-down, toss delivery or loft, air to surface burst, or depth charge.

The live B57 nuclear bomb had a yield of between 5 and 10 kilotons of TNT (10,000,000 to 20,000,000 pounds). The weight varied from 510 to 710 pounds. The B57 had a variety of fusing. Both the real B57 and the training BDU-12 were carried by F16A, F111 E and F models, P3 Orion submarine hunters, and helicopters such as the S-3A Viking and SH60 Seahawk and other aircraft.

The rear tail section is expelled by an internal gas generator. Upon release, this will pull out a retard parachute which cuts free later in the fall. This can simulate various deliveries.

The BDU-12 is one of the most widely used training bombs. It was referred to as Vitamin B12 by the folks in the military.
