I sold mine (14962) to Rex Ward who took it over to Normandy last year.

If I found another one cheap with a decent hull I'd have it, just don't know what I'd do with all the Dodges that are currently parked in " Dusty's " old parking space.

I never really floated mine at all, but I did work on most of it. Anyone have any questions?

I too am a little miffed that there have not been any DUKW postings. I guess the water truck people have not found this board yet.

My kids would love it if I owned a DUKW as our house is on a small lake...unfortunately with the condition of DUKWs here in the NE USA in my price range they would have their own kids before it was sea-worthy.

The absolute best advice I can give you is to read the manuals, ALL the manuals, from front to back and then start again and read them sideways. If ever a vehicle was well-covered by the manuals it's the DUKW.

Get the drivers manual, all three maintenance manuals, and the ORD 7-8-9 parts list and you should have everything you need. On-line if you need advice one of the most experienced owners is Steve Greenberg << SGREENB810@aol.com >> and on the east coast Hank LaBarbara for whom I don't have an e-mail address unfortunately.

Let's see now, special DUKW stuff;

grease your pillow block, take care of your transfer case, idle the engine before shutdown to avoid exhaust manifold cracking

Gordon, Thanks for the advice. I live down the road from Portrayal Press and got all the manuals before buying the duwk. My wife knows I am crazy because I consider them good reading.
I was very lucky to find one that's unmolested, unrestored and complete with no rust!! I think I need to find a few hand wrench's and anchor.

Question, how difficult are DUKW's to work on? I have never spent any time with one, but it appears that maintance and restoration would be very difficult.

No way to quantify it.

Remember a DUKW is 85% standard GMC 6 c 6, so if you've worked on one of them you are OK. There are particular quirks and difficult stuff, but compared with another amphibian the same size, such as an Alvis Stalwart, the DUKW servicing is no problem at all.

Regular clean, paint, grease, and lube stuff seems to be the secret.

... but the jury is still out on that tyre tread pattern.

I sold the last of my M29C's years back and bought my Tucker Sno-Cat instead - basically just down to hassle with the tracks.

I've downsized pretty much everything to Dodge, or Dodge-powered, and now I'm doing a railway adapted '41 van and trailer. I'd have another DUKW - but only if I ran across another good hull that was very cheap as DUKW prices in the UK now look a little silly to me.

Wow That is an OSSOM DUKW David I hope to be doing the same next summer, any tips? Did you blast the inside? and what prep did you have to do? Did you use the epoxy primer? Nice Olive Drab paint where did you get it and how much did you use. Thanks Tim

All of the brackets, lights ect were taken off and then sand blasted. Epoxy primer and then OD. I think it it used 7 1/2 gal OD to do the out side. I am still doing the areas under the floor boards using por-15 then etch primer then por 15 white hard nose two part white or OD under the cargo area
