Appears to be some sort of Amphibious Engineers unit. A little reasearch on the Amphibious engineers may shed light on the 8640th. Amphibious Engineers were responsible for getting all types of Military Equipment ashore during amphibious landings. Their equipment included DUKWs Cranes, bulldozers, and Materials Handling Equipment. They trained with the GPA early in the war when the availability of DUKW was critical.

I spent a few seconds with he excellent book "MARQUAGES ET ORGANISATION" by Becker/Milmeister, on Page 80 there is a photo of a DUKW with the unit identification 7A 8540E HQ 6, the photograph was dated September 1951. I believe this will get you started on the right track. It is 2AM and I am going back to bed.

You are very welcome. Do you have the book Marqueges Et Organization?
I am amazed at the research that is done in Europe, and all of the interesting information that Becker and Milmeister put into their books. I am always watching for the latest books by Becker.
