Bomb Kit #7 for a CCKW...What is it?

Post by Bill_Wolf »

Hey Joel, Dr. Deuce, and any others.

I had a question to the site.

Tell me about "Bomb lift #7" for the CCKW.

What is it?

What did it come with?

What CCKW did it go on?

All Steel bed or composit?

Books I have are no help....

There was a "Set, No. 7" which was a boom supported by two arches that was usually installed in SWB/LWB CCKW and could be foiund still used by the Army in some units up into the 80s. It had a Chain Hoist that was suspended from a trolley wich rolled the length of the boom. These bolted to the floor of the cargo body in four places, and converted the 2 1/2 Ton 6X6 into sort of a light wrecker or boom truck. I believe this is what you are talking about. They show up once in a while, less the Hoist, and cannot be hauled home in your family vehicle. I passed up a couple at an equipmwnt Auction here in Maine about 3 years ago. One brought $75.00, the other a couple hundred. Many WWII Motor Sargeants will remember these. They add height and length to the SWB/LWB CCKW and are installed with the rear arch even with the rear end of the Cargo Body

Thanks Joel.

Was this used on composite beds or steel beds only.

Was there a different unit on the 352 vs 353 because of bed length?

Nothing in my TM's

Same set for SWB or LWB, and steel or wood body. I am not sure what came to reinforce the floor, but can remember some sort of steel plates with same bolt pattern as the bottoms of the arches. This Set Is probably in the SNL 27 Series, and I do not have any of those books. The footprint of the front of the boom and the rear arch pretty well take up the SWB Cargo Body floor, and about 3/4 of the LWB body.

#7 Sets

Post by Degsy »

We have an ex French 352 which when we bought it was fitted with a #7 set of French manufacture which appears to be an almost exact copy of the original design. The 2 base supports which mount accross the truck bed rest on thick timbers, the whole then bolted through the bed. There was no chain hoist fitted when we obtained the truck but we have recently been offered one,the jury is still out!

Again, thanks for the information . I eventually would love to get a bomb hoist for my Army Air force used truck. Think it would look good with some practice bombs in the bed of the truck. :D

Bomb Kit

Post by Degsy »

T#7set and bomb service truck were two different things although they had some similarities in design, they involved a modification of the 353 cargo body and the lift frame and lifting arrangements were different. There is a picture in Bart H. Vanderveens book-:The Observers Fighting Vehicles Directory World War 11.Book is now out of print but turns up on Ebay from time to time and I have seen several on bookstalls at Military Events, price seems to be fifty pounds sterling upwards!,expensive but a mine of info and pics.

A wrecker set #7 will end any thoughts of putting a WW2 Jeep in the back of a LWB CCKW....

A number of years ago I passed up an M27 CCKW Bomb Truck for $600! It was in GA and I in NH. Due to the non-reduceable height, It would have had to have been on a lowbed all the way $$$. Even when I was in Normandy in 89, I did not see one and they have one of everything over there!
