Dashboard date plate 1949

Post by arthur.m »

There is a little plate riveted to the dashboard of my Tipper, sized maybe 2 x 3" and situated at the right end of the board. Yesterday I freed it from the thick layer of Norwegian paint and found the "USWD No 4664418" which is interesting to know. I also found the following text "DATE R.F.I. 23.8.49". What does this mean? Is it the day the truck was handed over to the Norwegian army, or is it a US Army plate?

I wish I could help you out, but you do have a need plate on your truck. Anytime you jave extrameoous plate, other that those normally on a truck, that is special. I hope someone here can help you.

I don't have all the specifics, and my memory is a little fuzzy on the subject, but the 4664418 is the USA (hood number) number that is assigned to your truck. and the RFI may refer with the terms of Reconstruction Finance system under which friendly foreign nations were issued US military equipment after WWII in order to build up their military strength. It has been over 25 years since I have done any reference on this subject.

The hood number I am very happy about, I thought I'd never find it out. The hood itself doesn't look like it' s ever going to reveal any old markings. The RFI thing was interesting to know, thank You very much!

Sadly I have practically no time to concentrate on the truck now, I have an old house to renovate, but it's interesting to collect these valuable pieces of information.

Would be interested to know the answer to that as well.

Cheers

I may not be 100% correct on my interpretation, but am positive that R.F.I. refers to the agency or that was responsible for transfer or reprocessing the CCKW before it became foreign aid. This is an example that illustrates that there is more to Army trucks than driving or fixing one.
Now I have a question, what will you do once you find out what the tag means? One thing for certain, is that the truck in question does have a pedigree of some sort, and has 5 minutes more history than the trucks without the extra data plate.

I think it is like tracing your family tree, doesn't mean anything to anyone else but means a great deal to the person who owns it. 8)
