RADIATOR CAPS
For those of you that have a WWII Radiator Cap installed, did you know that there is a fibre gasket, GM-846732 that rests on the shoulder inside the Radiator Filler Neck? Without it your cap will not seal. The Valve on the original style cap is all brass, and does not have the rubber seal attached to it. If you are using a Post War 4# Cap with the rubber seal attached to it, you should remove the Gasket from the neck. Be Careful, these Gaskets are very hard to find, they also are used on the WC, 4 Ton Diamond T and MB/GPW. Many Vendors will sell you a cap, and never mention the gasket.
Some CCKW owners have remarked that their GMC kicks out water every time they shut down their truck after a run just after topping off the Radiator, this is normal, and if you leave it at that level, you will find that id does not have additional overflow. The radiator coolant will seeek its own level, and the easiest way is to look into the radiator of a cold engine, and you will just be able to see the coolant, you may have to rock the truck side to side, to detect the water, but should stay at that level. The CCKW has a tendency for the Temperature Gauge to creep to 200F just after shut down, this is normal.

My radiator cap has a little tightening arm on top. The operating parts are brass, and there is a fiber gasket. What period is this cap? My truck has never belched water after shut down.

You has the OEM WWII Issue Cap, a little belch may bejust what the old girl needs-Alka Seltzer will work just fine, while reducing acidity of the coolant. Who has more fun than an old fart with a CCKW?

Again thanks for your information. Old farts with CCKW's are a fun group of people. Have you noticed that most of the jeep owners and lovers are kids. Takes a man to drive a CCKW

radiator cap
I was wondering if the cap with the arm on it was original,my CCKWX still has one,I'll have to see if has the gasket,I've never had the water spurting problem, but I've driven older vehicles all my life, and I know you don't fill the radiator all the way.

This kid is getting a head start on being a man then, I'm 15 and almost ready to restore one. The only thing holding me back is that darned jeep of my brother's. I don't post that often but I have been reading ALL of the tips and advise on how to restore and maintain one. I have just learned another thing about the CCKW with this post.

Another young fart...
Hi
I'm with Nick, not all CCKW owners are old farts,I'm 26!! my compressor truck was the first military vehicle I bought.I've had it five years.
I did get a little pissed a while back with a military vehicle ex-spert here in the UK who made some comment about having to be a man to handle a GMC,the point I always make is how old were most truck drivers during WW2? 20? 21?
Good luck Nick, hope you find the right truck for you.here in the UK they turn up often in nice original condition but the cost of shipping one to the US would be huge I guess.
Matt.

Bill, it looks like time for a new Cap, is that a crack in the brass above the valve? The caps do show up, (Aberdeen), but the Gaskets do not.

Hello Joel,
I didn't notice that mark until you mentioned it...I will check.
I have an NOS cap I picked up and plan on installing that...and you are right no gasket is with it.
I am in the final stages of finishing the Chevy 325 4X4 Fire Truck. When that gets done then I will start on the CCKW. Mechanicals first then cosmetic..
I am itching to start the Jimmie especially after reading all the input from all the great folks here.

radiator caps
I was just out stripping another truck and got looking at caps. Did all the caps have the little handle? The cap on my open cab dosen't have the handle but uses the all brass pieces with the gasket down in the radiator. Another question ,did the chevy use a different radiator mounting frame, the one on the K-44 I sold has been torched, did they use a one piece frame around the radiator,I was going to include a CCKW frame for him but now I'm not sure if it is correct. And another thing,I'm not an old fart,I just feel like it.Does that qualify me to be a CCKW owner?

Welcome to the Old Farts of America, The Chevrolet and CCKW used same Cap, there were other caps used at times to replace it, MB, for ex, all WWII used the separate gasket, post war AC, Gates, Stant, Blah, blah, blah, had the rubber on the valve and the gasket would be removed. Core Support for Chevrolet was one piece, the Top section was made to it. I believe CCKW will fit OK, but Radiators were different.
