BEAD LOCKS

Post by joel gopan »

Note that the 3/4 and 1 1/2 Ton WC used them with the 900X16, the MB/GPW used them with the Combat Wheel, and the CCKWs with the 750X20 Tires used none. Why was this? Was it because it was anticipated that CCKWs would not have flat tires?

Tires used with Bead Locks were classified as Combat Tires, and had "BL" embossed on the sidewalls.
Todays NDTs are not molded the same as Combat Tires, but they fit just fine.

bead locks

Post by 42 chevy »

just be lucky that the Chevy's and CCKW's did not have them, makes changing a tire easier. I have super singles (DUKW Wheels) on my Chevy. What a job it was to dismunt the old tires. Being on the wheel for 40 plus years did not help either. The original DUKW tire had a 12 ply
rating (Meaning a thicker sidewall than the later 6 ply "GAMMA GOAT" tire, also they have less "give". You cannot use a tire changing machine to dismount a tire that is on a bead lock wheel. The bead lock won't allow the bead to be broken (thats what is was designed to do in the first place). You have to use your tire irons, sledge hammers etc. to get the bead broken. Breaking down 1 a day was all mine body could handle.
The reason the DUKW's had bead locks was because of the tire inflation system. If you are using DUKW tires on your Chevy or CCKW, there really is not any reason to install the bead locks, just use a tire flap with your tube.
In theory, the DUKW whele would be eaiser to change in the field, maybe when they were when brand new, but saltwater, rust and mother time do not help the siuation. Also DUKW wheels are "safer" as there is no lock ring, instaed there are 17 nuts (if i remember correctly) that hold teh wheel togather.
If anybody needs guidence changing a DUKW tire, I can tell you what worked and what did'nt work for me.
