Closed Cab CCKW

Here's the other CCKW that I bought, we picked it up yesterday. Unfortunately the K53 could not come, it wouldn't fit.

That's my dad's new 24" trailer. The CCKW seems short to me - could it be a SWB truck? It's got the early closed cab (as you can see) and even says GMC on the grille. I could probably figure out exactly what it was and what year it was if I climbed into it, but it's been sitting out for about 10 years, and I really loathe putting myself into that situation... :rolleyes: Unfortunately this truck is very rusty, it's got some big old holes in the back, doors are rusted out... looks like it's gonna be a parts truck.

The truck (both, actually - the one it's pulling too) in the picture above isn't mine... it's the museums on Camp Pendleton. It's a great setup if you enjoy being deaf and like going up 2% grades at less than 20mph.

scrape the frame and get the serial number. That will tell you for sure if it us a 353 or 352

LWB is 164" from Center od Front Hub to the Center of the Trunion Bar (where bogey pivots) SWB is 19" shorter or 145".

A friend had a 353 made from a 352...

I helped him make it back into a 352 and he eventually sold it to Bob Foster who bought the gas tank for it from our own Joel Gopan

They had the length correct for a 353 as best as I could measure. The welds gave it away.

And I miss Bob Foster.
I sold him the original Small Neck SWB tank out of mine and installed a NOS one. The Bracket Assy with spare dual spare tire set up was removed from a SWB that was parted out in the late 40s and sold to Bob around 90/91.

Early Brushguard.

Door hinge mounted mirror.

The sideshields don't look like they have the grounding strap hole.

you have a great deal to work with there. My truck was worse than that one and with a lot of sweat, blood from busted knuckles and vision it is restored and running today . It took five years , on weekends and days off, but i felt it was worth it. I realize that some trucks end up being parted out, but I always hate to see it, that means that there is one less old warrior out there to tell their story.

I'll take some more pics the middle of this week to show the extent of the damage. I took a lot of walk around photos last weekend of the K53 that I will post later today. I learned that it has history from MCAS Miramar up to the 50's until a guy bought it out of DRMO, and apparently used it for a trip up to Northern California. The story goes the radiator got damaged and becaues of that he let it sit.

I will be contacting some people at MCAS Miramar soon to see if I can find any photos...
