I do it because I can clean, inspect, sort by dates (Budd rims have dates you know), paint and match tires in pairs. On the 6X6's, when the front two tires wear on the outside, I turn them around and remount them to even out the wear.
You need a powered machine like the Bishman type with 220 Volt motor and a hydraulicly driven arm and wheel disk that can break the bead loose after forty plus rusty years on the old ones.
They are not dangerous if you a carefull, have the tools and follow the safety rules. ALL the Safety rules.
Even with the right machine and tools its a great way to get a full body work out and you can really work up a sweat on a summer day.
If you have only one truck and seldon have to mount a tire, take it to the truck shop. And have them balance them while they are at it.
If you have the time and tools, it's a post graduate course in motor pool madness! Who needs the health club gym work out after an afternoon of busting truck tires?
Have fun
