Carbine Holster...Universal Gun Rack

Post by Bill_Wolf »

I have brought this issue over from another post to start a new thread.

Was there a particular gun spec'd for the CCKW driver? Did it depend upon the variant.

I know that the Engineer Fire Fighters were spec'd a M-1 Carbine for the Chevy Combat Fire truck 135/325/525. The Gun Rack was placed upright on the floor next to the glove box. This spec is in the Fire Fighting TM.

What about the others?

i do know that in the early part of the war. drivers were issued springfields or side arms. this was due to the fact that garrand construction had to catch up.

Even later in the war in Europe a lot of the photos I have seen of open cab trucks there are Springfield 03A3's in the racks. I think it was more of what the drivers could find rather than what they might have been issued. Some on another post have mentioned the carbine being the weapon of choice on trucks.
I do know that most Marines carried 1903 Springfields in the Pacific and the Army troops would sleep on their Garands to keep from haveing them stolen by some Marine. :D
