The GMC CCKW

Some wheres I saw a picture of an CCKW with an A frame set up,it was a WW2 photo,it seems like they were installing an aircraft engine or some thing, I'm trying to find pictures of field modified CCKWs with A frames,my CCKWX which has one is a very nice job,much more then you usually see from bubba,I wondering if this truck might have been field modified by the military. I'm sure no two would be the same but it would be nice to find some pictures to compare to.Beside which it would give me good justification for not removing it if I ever get around to restoring it,it has got to be the most useful vehicle I own. Thanks Guys.

There were GI "A" Frame Kits for the CCKW and Dodges,and they showed up as post war surplus in the 40s 50s as the Army purged their WWII stock. Many dealers advertised them in the Rock and Dirt and Gold Dirt in the 50s 60s. I have not seen one for years.
The paperwork for installation would have been in the form of a "TB".
Of course these kits would have applied to trucks with winches only. The M-108 Crane Truck and M-62 Wrecker sort of made these obsolete.

There are pics of a GMC and a Dodge with A frames in'TheGMC 6X6 and DUKW A Universal Truck' ,there is also a pic of a GMC a McCabe Powers
pipe line layer (oil field body) which utilised a rear mounted A frame.
All these vehicles are shown in US service.

The Mc Cabe Powers unit is part of the Oil field Body modification to CCKWs that were in Construction Engineer Batallions. The same body was used by the SeeBees on some M5H6 Internationals. It is heavy. I still haver a part or two from one of these.

The issue "A" Frame Kits that the Army had Steel channels instead of round tubing.

Thjere is a photo in Becker/Dentzer's boo9k on page 47 of a 101st Airborne engineers truck with an A frame.
