Transfer Case Question
Hi, Im New To The CCKW Series Trucks, And I Was Wondering If Anyone Can Tell Me The Differences Between The Split Axle Transfer Case Setup And The Banjo Transfer Case Setup. And Why They Wont Interchange With Each Other. Are The Split Transfer Cases Still A Remote Mounted Case Or Is It Bolted To The Transmission Housing. I Dont Any Military Truck Used A Transfer Case That Bolted To The Transmission Tailshaft. It Looks To Me In Pictutres That The Split Case Has 2 Driveshafts Coming From It That Powers The Rear Wheels, Through A Pillow Block Mounted On The First Rear Axle That Has A Shaft Going To The @nd Rear Axle. And On The Banjo Transfercase It Looks Like 1 Driveshaft Coming From The Case Right Down The Middle To The First Axle Then Another Shaft to The Second Axle. Have I Confused Anyone Yet? Or Have I Bumped My Head? Will Someone Please Clarify This Drive Setup For Me.

Both transfers (banjo, split) are mounted remotely from the tranny with a short driveshaft and ujoints.
Both have 2 shafts to the rear axles, one thru the pillow block to the rear-rear axle

The frames are indeed quite different especially with the xfer mounting

thanks to everyone who has replied to my post. well now that we know there is a frame difference, let me ask this question, which truck would make a better candidate for swapping to a chevy v8 engine and 700r4 automatic. would the split transfer case truck work better or the banjo axle transfer case truck be a better candidate. the reaon why im asking is becasue there are 2 cckws for sale and im going to buy one for a project. not a military restoration. and 1 is split 1 is banjo. both trucks need the seats replaced. im not sure ive seen a cckw seats for sale but ive read that a chevy seat will work but the hooks on the back are a pain in the rear end. now when we are talking about using a chevy seat are we talking about a 1/2 ton truck seat or would it have to be a seat from a
1 1/2 ton chevy truck?

You will have interference problems with a V8 and the steering column.
You will probably also have drivetrain problems due to the greatly increased torque
You may not have enough room to fit an automatic tranny between the engine and the xfer
You will have to find a new place to mount the pedals. They mount to the bellhousing
There is no seat issue on a CCKW. A Chevy, yes but even there you remove the fingers from the bottom of the seatback and replace them with two 2x4 wood blocks each side

Dan,
Most of us here are collectors and restorers of CCKW's and "dislike" ( I am being nice here) when a Steel Veteran is changed. Don't take it personally ...we treat everyone badly who suggests any type of Blasphemous work....
In reality the CCKW in not the correct candidate to invest your time and money in if you want to install those upgrades. While it has that great "Retro" look the guts of the truck from the driveline to the frame, brakes, etc. won't handle the added power well.
You would be better off picking an "M" series or a 50's GMC Civilian series truck to modify where the driveline could handle the torque of the more powerfull engine.
Good luck in your quest.
Bill

bill, i understand your argument! thats one reason why i was cpnsidering the banjo cckw for my project because it is a beater needs a bad restoration! but the other truck i was considering was a split axle cckw and it is in very good shape and should be restored to original military specs! i have been considering the M series truck but they have air brakes and i would have ti figure out a way to get the air to the brakes unlike the cckw and i like the cckw body stlye of the 40's trucks. what a beast!

I'd still rather see a cckw with a small block chevy or whatever in it and someone enjoying it than see it getting shredded to feed some Chinese steel mill. I've seen too many people put down and humiliated on other boards by people who think it's their right to protect a certain vehicle. I personally don't like to see anything of historic value modified or ruined, but if I don't own it, I try to gently suggest my ideas. What's gained by turning an owner away? OK, now I'll get off my soap box. Flame away!
