messing with the open cab

I was taking it easy this after noon,but it didn't last long,I got looking at the open cab CCKW that I bought home acouple of months ago,I haven't touched it since I drove it off the truck,the last time I ran it I noticed the temp gauge was quite high,when I picked it up I didn't spend any time checking stuff out,other than the oil,I just dropped a 12 volt battery in it and drove it onto the truck,so today I figured I ought to use the six volt battery and put some water in it,it refused to start on six volts,even with ether,so I dropped the 12 volt in,fired instantly,so as I let it warm up I was checking out some stuff,it still has a headlight bulb in it,so I turn the swith on and it acually works,and didn't burn out after a couple minutes,as I reached over to turn the switch off I notice the ammeter was showing a charge,so I assume sometime in it's life this truck was converted to 12 volts,I tried to find the voltage on the generator or the regulator but it was getting dark so I'll have to do some checking later,it's nice to know I didn't mess anything up useing the 12 volt battery.

If yours has the late Delco Regulator with the Cover held on with 4 screws, the Data Plate will be on the lower side beneath the 3 Terminals, the plate will read 6 VOLTS, 40 Amp, NEG Ground.
While I am at it, beware of the Vendors offering NOS CCKW Generators with multiple part numbers, so far they have been the Early 25 AMP POSITIVE Ground model. Some of the expert "elite" that show up on other web sites are just ignorant of the part they offer, and want your money. They are the "enema", and recite facts and figures from manuals they have not mastered.

I am not the expert that others are and not totally into " political correctness" under the hood. When I converted my truck to 12 volts I put in a `12 volt single wire alternator and that solved all problems. I replaced the pully to a wider one so the belt fit, built a bracket that fit into the exact place the generator came out of. I left the old regulator for looks, as the alternator had a built in regulator. The beauty is that an alternator is charging at idle, and in long parades this can be a blessing.
