CCKW TAILGATES
How many of you have a problem with the tailgate bouncing open as you bump along down the highway? You wouldn't, if you knew how to correctly secure the hooks in the loop in the Cargo Body. Do not just hang the Chain Hook down thru, but turn the hook upside down and put it up through from the bottom side of the loop. Your problems will be over. Do not forget, that as the Driver, it is your responsibility to secure the Safety Strap at the rear of the Troop Racks. You would have learned this at the Driving Schools the Army had in WWII.

Never had this problem, I have later style chain hooks, these are much better secured in the tailgate.
This is probaply the style you mean Joel, this is a chain hook of an
early cckw 352. You cant see it but the 352 truck on the right side of this one has the same chain hooks. sorry have no pic of my 1943 cckw.

I am only going by memory, but I do not remember the latest Composite Steel cargo Body on CCKW having the style tailgate you depict. A lot happens in 60 years. I would have to see a good side view of your cargo body and a good clear view of the tailgate.

I believe that you have the late CCKW Body by the Budd, does it have a wooden floor. The last pics you sent are of one of the late issue tailgates.

The tTe Down Hooks are of the Wire loop or round type that was found on the late composite body. The composite body has features such as rows of bolts where the floor meets the side panels, and are visible along the lower sides at floor level, the tail light brackets will be bolted to the rear of the body, and on the last of the production will be the flexible segmented Mudflaps. A lot happens in 60 years and there may be a little bit of everything mixed into your truck. No matter what people may say, your truck is still an authentic CCKW. Those of us who have been at it for many years are not impressed by what is called "washer polishing" which may bring up topics such as, "which door of the General Motors Factory did my late Monday evening July 3rd 1943 third series CCKW-A2 drive of ?" It ain't worth the ulcers, enjoy it and be happy.
PS: I know Jim Seavey is eating up every bit of this BS I'm printing, arn't you Jim? Jim is a big WWII CCKW fan,and his truck is lonesome, he wants to start a local club in Maine, go for it Jim, my truck is happy just being with me.

Corne,
I have the segmented mudflaps on my 6/45 Airportable 353 composite bed cargo.
The truck vacationed in Norway during the MDAP period.
They are metal plates/louvers held together by a canvas strap.

This picture was taken before I bought the truck.

The reason that collectors, 60 years after the fact, have not witnessed these mudflaps, is that most exposure to the CCKW is thru Wartime action pictures. The trucks with the mud flaps were produced too late in the war to become numerous in War Zones, and state side photos. They were out there by the thousands. We as collectore in this day and age just were not there to see them. I can relate this to WWII Aircraft like the Mustang, there were late models like the P-51H that were all over the country in Guard units, and the P-82 Twin Mustang model which had a brief post war career. Same can be said for the late P-47N. What is out there for us to see are the more numerous earlier models of the type that saw battle. I am lucky, as I grew up at the Main Gate of a WWII Airfield, and my family was in the Gov't surplus truck business. It does not get any better than that, I also had a chance to attend mechanic school in the Army at a time th instructors were WWII and Korean Veterans, and had fun honing my skills on the older trucks free of charge courtesy Uncle Sam. In those days the Post Motor Pools had WWII Equipment sotred in like new condition awaiting their day at the Firing ranges. There were M-3, M-4, M-5 Tanks, M-7 Priests, M-10, M-36 Tank Destroyers, M-26 Pacifics, CCLWs etc. These were everywhere at Ft Dix, Aberdeen, Fort Drum, Aberdeen, etc. Most are gone now. Aberdeen, had B-17 and B-29 Bombers at its airfield awaiting Balistics testing. back in 62. There was a M-24 in front of the Post Theater at Ft. Drum in 62. Col Jarret was Curator at Ordnance Museun during my tour, and was a delight to talk to. As an enlisted man, I had pleasure of dining with Officers at Aberdeen, as my Training Companys' Mess Hall, served both the Post Headquarters, and thw Wacs, and we couls be seated at their tables by asking permission. I met the Cheif of Ordnance, General Heinrichs at our Mess Hall. Hair cuts at Post HQ were $2.00, and took 2 minutes, while a "boot black" gave your boots a "spitshine" for $0.50. It seemed the sun shone every day for the 4 months at Aberdeen. I was a Class leader and had to march my Class to and from School each day, we had to be sure to post and recover Road Guards at each intersection. There was a Senior NCO that drove an M-38 daily on his rounds as "Courtesy Patrol to moniter the military bearing of those marching, he had a P.A. system in the Jeep that he would turn on and play marching music to perk up the troops. I enjoyed life at Aberdeen, and just loved standining Reville and Retreat. We had soldiers from 26 nations attending training at Aberdeen, I speciffically remember one redheaded Iraqui Officer that I drank Sodas with at the PX, his name was Ibraham Aldouhri, who is #5 on the deck of "most wanted" cards. He was attending US Army Officers Ordnance Orientation Course at aberdeen as a 20 year old. Remember him? He is the one with the pointed head, presented Sadam the Saber that we all saw on TV. Yes, we trained many who have turned on us.

Joel is right on with this. After 60 odd years and many modifications, including modifications made by the military using these trucks into the early 60's a lot was changed from the original factory condition of the truck. My truck has plexiglass windshields, an Air Force modification apparantly as they had a lot of plexiglass on Air Force bases. That is what makes this hobby so much fun.
As far a Joels references to WWII aircraft, the whole time I was in the CAF we had all kinds of modifications to these old warbirds, mostly in the cockpits where all new aviantics were were installed, even though space was tight . New navigation lights and of course replica guns and bomb loads and all of the armour plateing removed as it was not longer needed. We also found out that bright shiny paint jobs attracted more people and they donated more money to keep these old birds alive. We were always polishing the bright aluminum surfaces, wiping the oil from the bottom of the engine cowlings and properly dressing the props to insure that we put forth the best image. Presentation, Presentation.

Thats correct Bill also on Airportables, forgot to mention that. Ive only seen 2 of these, these trucks are very rare. I have pictures from a
complete and restored airportable also with those mudflaps
What Joel says is correct, a lot happens in 60 years.
So we are ofcourse never sure, about what we are talking nowadays.

Forgot to tell this, may be funny to know.
At the exact the same place where my cckw is parked in the pic above,
2 SHERMAN tanks where left there after the war.
These where after the war used as practice vehicles for handgranade training. This is what Ive been told.
These tanks where moved away about 15 years ago.
